Give ChatGPT a trusted source and say what you need to remember or apply. Ask for one clear question per card, a short answer and a source reference. Check the answers, remove clues and duplicates, then try the cards without looking before exporting them.
What you need before you start
You want a study deck from notes, a PDF or a lesson without turning every sentence into a card.
Bring: Notes or source passages with labels, learner level, learning goal, required terms and the format your flashcard tool expects.
Start with these steps
- Define what the learner must recall or distinguish.
- Ask for one clear question and answer per card with a source location.
- Flag cards that contain two answers, clues in the question or unsupported additions.
- Test the deck on a changed example and remove cards that only reward recognition.
- Export the chosen format and keep the source beside the deck for corrections.
A prompt you can adapt
Create flashcards from these labelled notes for [learner/goal]. Each front must ask one clear, answerable question. Each back must give the essential answer and a source label. Include recall, important distinctions and small applications that the notes support. Do not add unsupported facts or reveal the answer in the question. Flag ambiguous source statements. Return front, back, source and card type. After I check the cards, export [format].
Replace every bracket with real information. Remove fields that do not affect your task.
What this looks like in practice
Teaching example: notes define percentage as part ÷ whole × 100. A card asks: A group has 20 people and five choose option A. What percentage choose A? The back shows 5 ÷ 20 × 100 = 25%. A separate card tests why the whole belongs in the denominator.
Choose what the cards should help you do
Flashcards work best when you know what you want to recall or distinguish. You might need vocabulary, a formula, the difference between two ideas or the first step in a method. Tell ChatGPT the learner's level and the task the cards should support. A beginner learning a formula needs different cards from someone practising when to use it.
Use notes or a source you can inspect. Label sections so every answer can point back to them. Ask ChatGPT to stay within the source and mark anything unclear. If your notes are incomplete, find the missing explanation before turning it into a confident answer. A card is easy to repeat, including when it is wrong.
Do not try to make a card from every sentence. Some passages supply background, examples or a long argument that needs a different study task. Cards are useful for short recall and focused applications. A full essay question often needs practice writing or explaining, with a few cards supporting the key pieces.
Give each question a clear boundary
A card needs a cue that tells you what kind of answer is expected. What is control is too broad: the word could refer to an experiment, a computer setting or a business process. Add the setting. A clearer question might ask what a comparison group does in the experiment described in your notes.
One card should test one answerable idea. That does not always mean one word. A calculation card can include the method and result because both belong to the same small task. A question asking for six unrelated definitions is harder to grade and often hides which part you forgot.
Keep important conditions with the idea. If a rule applies only in a particular situation, include that situation on the front or back as needed. Shortening a qualified statement into an absolute can make the card easier while making the answer false. Clarity matters more than reaching an arbitrary word limit.
Teaching example: a small set of source notes
This teaching example uses made-up lesson notes about percentages. N1 says: A percentage describes a part out of one hundred. N2 says: To find the percentage of a group, divide the part by the whole and multiply by one hundred; the whole must be greater than zero. N3 says: A change from twenty to twenty-five is an increase of five units and twenty-five percent of the starting value. N4 says: For a percentage increase, divide the increase by the starting value and multiply by one hundred; a zero starting value cannot use this formula.
The learning goal is to choose the correct whole or starting value and carry out a small calculation. A deck made only of definition cards would not fully test that goal. Ask for recall, a distinction and a short application. The examples below use only the relationships stated in the notes.
These notes are included so you can compare every card with its source. In a real study task, use your course's definitions and accepted method. If a teacher or exam expects a particular convention, say so before generating the set.
A complete small deck with checkable answers
The first card checks the meaning of a percentage. The second checks the formula and its condition. The application card uses five out of twenty, which gives twenty-five percent. Another card asks for the difference between an increase in units and a percentage increase. The final card tests the zero-starting-value limit.
You do not have to keep all six. If two cards ask something you already know easily, spend more time on the application you miss. Keep source labels in a separate field or on the back, so they help you check an answer without giving it away on the front.
| Front | Back | Source |
|---|---|---|
| What does a percentage describe? | A part out of one hundred. | N1 |
| How do you find what percentage a part is of a group? | Part ÷ whole × 100; whole must be greater than zero. | N2 |
| Five of twenty people choose A. What percentage choose A? | 5 ÷ 20 × 100 = 25%. | N2 |
| A value rises from 20 to 25. What is the increase in units? | 25 − 20 = 5 units. | N3 |
| A value rises from 20 to 25. What is the percentage increase? | 5 ÷ 20 × 100 = 25%. | N3, N4 |
| Can the percentage-increase formula in these notes use a starting value of zero? | No. It requires division by the starting value, so zero cannot be used. | N4 |
Repair vague cards and answer clues
A weak card might ask: What is the percentage? It supplies neither a part nor a whole. Repair it by adding the values and the situation: Five of twenty people choose A; what percentage choose A? The learner now has enough information, and the back can be checked against the source formula.
Another weak front says: A percentage is a part out of what hundred? That wording nearly gives away the answer. Ask for the concept without copying the answer into the cue. Also watch for grammatical clues, repeated phrases and multiple-choice options where the correct one is much longer than the others.
If the answer requires a list, say how many items or define the boundary. What should you remember about percentages invites an unlimited response. What is the denominator in the percentage-increase formula tests a specific point. A clear cue lets you tell the difference between not knowing and not understanding the question.
Check the answers against the original notes
Read each answer beside its source. Check numbers, names, formulas, exceptions and the direction of a relationship. ChatGPT may shorten correctly in one card and drop a condition in another. In the teaching set, omitting the zero restriction from the formula card makes its scope less clear.
For application cards, redo the calculation. Five divided by twenty is one quarter, so the percentage is twenty-five. A rise from twenty to twenty-five is five units, while the percentage increase uses twenty as the starting value. The source supports those steps. A result of five percent would confuse units with percentage change.
Do not use a source label as proof by itself. N2 beside an answer is helpful only if N2 actually supports it. If a card adds a fact outside the notes, either remove the fact or verify it with a trusted source and label that source. Keep the deck's boundary honest.
Cover the important differences without making duplicates
Ask for a coverage list showing which learning goal each card tests. This can reveal that ten cards all ask the same definition while no card checks when a formula applies. Add a card for the missing distinction rather than making the same definition sound different ten times.
Related cards are not always duplicates. In the teaching example, increase in units and percentage increase use the same values but test different outputs. Keeping them separate helps expose a common confusion. Two cards asking what percentage means in almost identical wording add less value.
Reverse a card only when the reversed question still has a clear answer. A definition may point to one term, but a broad property can describe many terms. If several answers fit, ask for one valid example and state the acceptance rule. Do not mark the source's first example as the only possible correct answer.
Try the cards before exporting the whole deck
Hide the back, answer the front and then compare. Say the answer aloud or write it briefly. Notice whether you knew the idea, recognized a familiar phrase or guessed from a clue. If the front is ambiguous, rewrite it. More repetition will not repair an unclear question.
Use a changed application after the initial attempt. For example, ask what percentage six of twenty-four represents. The same formula gives twenty-five percent, but the values have changed. Then try a case with a different result, such as three of twenty, which gives fifteen percent. These checks show whether you can use the method beyond one memorized pair of numbers.
Separate a learning error from a card error. If you picked the wrong denominator, practise that distinction. If the card omitted the whole, repair the card. Keep a small list of mistakes so the next session focuses on what actually failed.
Export with fields that stay together
Check what your flashcard app expects: front and back, perhaps tags and a source field. Ask for that structure explicitly. A tab-separated text file can be convenient, but a tab inside a field may split the card. Line breaks and separators need the correct escaping for the destination tool.
Keep answers simple during the first import. Try a small sample and inspect every front-back pair. Confirm that the source did not become the answer, that a quotation mark did not break a field and that special symbols such as ÷ display correctly. Only then import the rest.
Save a checked master copy alongside the source notes. If you later correct an answer, update the master and the imported deck so the wrong version does not return. A file generated in the chat still needs opening and inspection. A successful download alone does not show that every card imported correctly.
Use the deck as part of practice, then revise it
Return to difficult cards after a break and answer before looking. You can use your study tool's review system or a simple list of cards you missed. The useful signal is whether you can recall and apply the idea, not how many cards you clicked through. A perfect score immediately after reading the source may partly reflect short-lived familiarity.
Keep broader practice in the routine. Flashcards can help you remember a formula, but a longer problem may require choosing that formula among several methods. Ask ChatGPT for a short mixed exercise using the checked source, attempt it yourself and request feedback on the step where you became unsure.
Delete or archive redundant cards and repair cards that repeatedly confuse the question with the answer. Add new cards when a real mistake reveals a missing distinction. The deck is ready when its answers are accurate, its cues are clear and it supports the work you need to do. More cards are useful only when they add something worth learning.
Check the result before you use it
- Can you answer the front without guessing what it means?
- Does the back match the source and keep important conditions?
- Does the front avoid giving away the answer?
- Does the set test useful differences and applications, not only copied definitions?
- Does a small import keep each front with the correct back?
Watch for: A large deck can repeat the same easy cue while missing the idea you need to use. Check coverage and test recall before adding more cards.
